Switcing Phone Number Question?

Hi, I'm about to switch to Virgin Mobile after my ATT contract expires, and I want to switch my number. My ATT contract doesn't expire for a while, so I was wondering if i could set up this phone and get a new number then change that number to my old ATT one after my ATT contract expires?
