You are caught with a false statement. What will happen?

My husband was asked by a cousin of his to lie to the police. His cousin had a hit and run car accident, with a pole. And the cousin is using my husband as an alibi that he was with him that morning. My husband does not want to lie but is afraid of getting his cousin in trouble. I am trying hard to convince him otherwise but he is still confused as to what to do. If he tells the police the truth will they subpoena him to testify in court against his cousin?. What are the consequences if the police caught my husband lying to the police about his cousin's statement or alibi? I appreciate the help, Thank you!
