Are criminal subpoenas legitimate if served to a family member?

I am a witness in a domestic violence criminal case. A subpoena was given to my mother by a sheriff to give to me. Am I obligated to attend trial under these circumstances? I live 2 hours away and I was never served. The officer told my mother that if I did not appear that I would be arrested. I live in California.
